About the Office

The Canon Law National Office was established by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) in 2009. Its main purpose is to ensure the proper application of Canon Law for the good of the Church in Kenya.

Currently, the office also serves as the Child Protection Coordination Desk of KCCB.

The office oversees the administration of justice in the various ecclesiastical tribunals in the different ecclesiastical provinces of the Church in Kenya; offers canonical advisory services to KCCB; carries out training on topical issues as a contribution towards the ongoing formation of clergy and religious; it also champions the development and implementation of Policies in matters concerning Safeguarding of Minors and Vulnerable Persons in Kenya.

The office also collaborates with the leadership of the Canon Law Society of Kenya to organize conventions and forums to sensitize pastoral agents to Canon Law.

 

Mandate & Services

  • Canonical Consultation: Offering guidance to bishops, clergy, religious, and laity on matters of ecclesiastical law.
  • Marriage Cases: Supporting diocesan tribunals in handling matrimonial nullity cases and other related processes.
  • Formation & Training: Organizing workshops, seminars, and publications to deepen understanding of canon law among pastoral agents.
  • Policy Development: Assisting in the drafting of statutes, constitutions, and regulations for dioceses, associations, and Catholic institutions.
  • Ecclesiastical Structures: Providing support in matters concerning parishes, diocesan administration, and Church property.

2. Safeguarding Office

The Safeguarding Office of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops is dedicated to protecting children, and vulnerable adults within the Church. Rooted in the Gospel values of dignity, compassion, and justice, the office ensures that all pastoral environments are safe and nurturing.

Mandate & Services

  • Policy & Frameworks: Developing and implementing safeguarding guidelines in line with universal Church norms and Kenyan legal requirements.
  • Training & Awareness: Equipping clergy, religious, and lay pastoral agents with the skills to identify, prevent, and respond to abuse.
  • Case Management & Support: Providing mechanisms for reporting, investigating, and responding to safeguarding concerns, with emphasis on justice and healing for survivors.
  • Partnership & Collaboration: Working with dioceses, Catholic institutions, and civil authorities to uphold the rights and dignity of every person.
  • Monitoring & Evaluation: Ensuring compliance with safeguarding standards across dioceses and Catholic institutions in Kenya.
